Hurrying up to library

TANAKA Akio

When I was a high school student, my dream of near future was to go to library everyday for reading, learning and researching my themes at that time unknown. In the school I liked solving easy questions of mathematics and physics,  but those were all rudimentary questions for general students aiming university's entrance.

I thought that there would be clear themes of my own life somewhere in my learning world, which never came up to the surface. So above all things I wanted to go library to find my themes for my study life, in which I probably would satisfy in my youth time. I dreamed my figure hurrying up to library with carrying books under my arm being bothered nothing perfectly.

At a university my dream surely came to true. But a new more difficult problem emerged up in my front. It was a talent or gift for keeping study deeply. I was a common person having nothing peculiar gift. From that time my true long winding road to language study started towards hard field or precipitous mountain.

SILpaper is the paper site of SIL.
SIL is the abbreviation of Sekinan Institute of Language which is founded in 2003 by the former name SRFL Sekinan Research Field of Language at Hakuba, Nagano, Japan, aiming language universals using contemporary mathematical results.
Simple history of the research is written in the recent essay titled Why is boundary necessary in language? , that is reprinted at About of this site.
From now on some laboratory research will be shown here for making the new entrance to the study of language.
Past papers and the relatives are shown at SIL and SRFL. If necessary, please refer to them.

Under the dim light, the days with CHINO Eiichi / 1 August 2012

TANAKA Akio

I frequently talked with CHINO Eiichi at the coffee shop near the station we used to get on. The shop was at the second floor and the steps upstairs always sounded squeaking. Under the dim light the topics of conversation was on language or linguistics after all.

He was already the university professor but I was a poor research student. But he was always showed me the general tenderness. The subject he gave me were impressive and useful for me, in which the most important is the history of The Linguistic Circle of Prague and the excellent pioneers of language study. He had of course the unique approach to the study but I had never any conspicuous one except boundless interest on the study.

In his wide and precious telling for me I gradually determined my course to proceed. It was the making of basic and radical foundation on natural language by searching the structure of language through simple and clear description. For keeping this difficult aim I had a decision that there was only way to use mathematics that I had abandoned at the past for its hardness.

In my age 20s, I had read Ludwig Wittgenstein and Nicolas Bourbaki in concentrating. I did not clearly understand  Wittgenstein's approach. But I borrowed his writing style that was simple and clear. So my early work's descriptions were nearly at him. But I decided that I never adopted strongly-intuitive thinking.

I always considered mathematical basis or analogy. My aim was the independence from the intuitive description. Keeping on this course, there was seen the mathematical basis that I must adopt the model in which language universals are clearly described. I entered to the mathematical description of study that was confirmed premises of my way.

Winding road to physics / 16 January 2015

Winding road to physics
When I was a student of high school, I hoped to learn physics at university. But from various reasons in fact I learnt language at university on the other still longing for physics.
After graduation I once worked as a high school teacher and eight years passing over I returned to university for investigating language study. On the way I again met CHINO Eiichi in 1979, from whom I ever learnt Russian in 1969. By his teaching I had distinct aim for my study on language, making clear description to others using mathematics being assisted with physical thinking or approach. Mathematics was always set in my mind but my talent was not overtaken to its hardness. But aiming clear description to every situation I decided to learn again or thrice to make a new stage where I decided to come back to my starting point of youth being attracted to physics.

Sixties For Susan Sontag / 27 September 2012 and 30 November 2014

Sixties

For Susan Sontag

On Sixties, Susan Sontag wrote in her book, WHERE THE STRESS FALLS, 2001 as the following.

Perhaps the most interesting characteristic of the time now labeled the Sixties was that there was no little nostalgia. In that sense, it was indeed a utopian moment.
-From "Thirty Years Later..."

Surely I also think that it was a utopian moment, not utopia everlasting.
Someone ever said at a book, " We were loose change." Surely we were all loose change for a utopian moment. This is the great dedication to Sontag from me. We have lived in a same time though I was extremely coward far away than her to the time and myself.

27 September 2012

[Note]
Sixties are precious times for me though full of exactly heartbreaking events.
At first, using all the university's summer holidays in 1969, I read three times, one of the Japanese classics, Ochikubo Monogatari , in English Dark Hole Story written in Heian Times some 1,000 years ago, faithfully following the teach of  Japanese classic litrature's Scholar YAMAGISHI Tokuhei by the precise annotated text. The scholar lent me his valuable collation text of NAKAMURA Shuko in his library. Before beginning the holidays he said to me like admonishment that  selection of one classic in the vast literary heritage was alike a meeting with a  fiancée, walking to the station from the university in the clear summer evening.
And I sometimes read the modern Chinese novels, Luxun or Maodun, thinking on the Beijing's old days, of which CHEN Donghai taught us how to hear the Beijing Opera sitting the chair facing sideways to the stage.
In university I met CHINO Eiichi at the small room for Russian language in 1969.
I met KAJIMURA Hideki at his Korean class and Natary Muravijowa at her Russian class in the next year.
I learnt alone the composition of French by the text of MAEDA Yoichi at the university's library, who indicated me the splendid world of French language and philosophy while reading Pascal's Pensees little by little, almost all the days outside afar a demonstrations, in and outside the campus or streets of Tokyo.
It is the reason for I was Coward in those days.

How do the language models connect with natural language? / 11 January 2015

How do the language models connect with natural language?

TANAKA Akio

Natural language contains many important factors theoretically abstracted in the long philological studies.

At the contrast the language models made by mathematical description are themselves have not any connections with natural language.
The models by mathematics, which is totally composed from a few premises, contains many theorems and their understructures.
In these underconstructures, natural language's factors are resembled with mathematical factors.
At the result, some resemblances are compared between mathematical models and natural language.
From these works, some resemblances to language universals may be appeared in the factors of mathematical models modified by natural language.

Coffee shop named California

From Print 2012, Chapter 10

If C live, he also may ask me, "What  are you researching now?"
And I also will answer him as same as ever.
I have pursued universals, never done facts, without repenting.
Oh C, if you live, will we also talk on language at the table facing each other under the low ceiling of the shop, going up the steep stairs.
The name of the shop is California.
For the memory of our daily forgetful life, its never miserable though poor all over, I will write down our delight.

Prague, Karcevskij and CHINO - From SIL's essay / 9 January 2015

Almost all the linguistics' basis was taught from CHINO Eiichi in the late 1970s. I first met him in the late 1960s at his Russian class as a student when he was 36 and I was 20 years old. I can still refresh his memory of the small room of Russian. One day he joyfully come into the room and said "I found how to conquer the computer game!" He was always cheerful and sharp on lecture and teaching. If the time come back, I want to hear his younger days of Prague and above all things I want to hear his voice itself, if can return that same coffee shop near the station.

SILlab is the experimental site of SIL Sekinan Institute of Language, which shows the new direction of year 2015. Relationship between energy and distance is probably the main themes of the year. Distance is the most fundamental theme and energy is derived from distance. The two is deeply related in language, so I think.

Succession of Warp Theory and Quantum Warp Theory Warp

TANAKA Akio

1
Entropy principle is expressed as the following by Elliot H. Lieb and Jakob Yngvason. arXiv : cond-math / 9708200v2 (1999)
X and Y are comparable states.
 Y  if and only if  S (X) ≤ S (Y)
Y means that the state Y is adiabatically accessible from the state X.
2
The real world is not warp.
3
Language is warp from the real world.
4
Warp is likened by timber, i.e. seasoned timber does not warp.
5
Warp is given by energy.
6
When energy disappears, warp also disappears.
7
The state that warp disappears is entropy.
8
The state that language appears and disappears is expressed by entropy principle.
