Edward Sapir's LANGUAGE AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF SPEECH 1921 gave me a moment for study in 1980s while I was roaming about the darkness of not- getting any aim to study on language. I ever wrote a short paper being influenced in 2005 and after also wrote a memo on his book in 2014.

A moment came from his famous concept drift. At the near-end Chapter 7 Sapir wrote "the three major drifts", that were the next.

"The drift toward the abolition of most case distinctions"
"the correlative drift toward position as an accompanied"
"the drift toward the invariable word"

This "the three major drifts" are all apparently seen in Chinese, especially in the classical written language. At my age 20s and 30s I continuously had read Qing dynasty's classical linguistic books and papers. WANG Guowei, ZHANG Binglin, DUAN Yucai, WANGYyinzhi were the most reliable works for me.

Dear Y,

先日戦後の代表的な彫刻家、アルベルトジャコメッティAlberto Giacometti (1901 - 1966) の多分本格的な初めての展覧会が、六本木の国立新美術館NNACで開催中ですので、車で！行ってきました。旧青梅街道から井の頭通りを行き、代々木公園から原宿へ出て、青山墓地の横を通り、無事帰りました。

これは素晴らしい展示ですので、9月までですので、機会がありましたらご覧ください。NNACも今年で10周年、早いものです。

４人で、モネ展、モジリアニ展を見ましたが、覚えていますか。

GIACOMETTIはスイス生まれで、パリで制作をつづけ、戦後の多くの芸術家、詩人と交流し、自らも幾たびも、制作を変遷し続け、日本の哲学者、矢内原伊作と友情を保ち、その像も作り、徹底的なデッサンは一枚に数日かかり、少しでもポーズを動かすと、ものすごい驚きを示したそうです。

「実態を映すことはできない」「すべては試みだ」として、ひたすらデッサンと制作に打ち込んだようです。

来年1月には、東宝シネマシャンテで「Final Portrait」という伝記的な映画が来るようです。

私がGIACOMETTIに興味を持ったのは、1970年代初めで、私は20代半ば、高校の教師の先輩の同僚だった藝大出の彫刻家Sと会話したとき、

私が、「彼の作品はなぜあんなにヒョロヒョロしているんだろう」というと、彼は即座に「よく見てごらん、彼はまさしくロダンの直系だよ、あの強さとタッチは」と私にその本質を教えてくれました。S先生は40代半ばで、毎年銀座で個展を開き、その頃はひたすら、クジャクの絵を描き続けていました。二人で、国立近代美術館に行ったとき、佐伯祐三の有名なリュクサンブール公園の絵を私が初めて見て、「わあ、すばらしいな」とか言ったとき、先生は「でもよく見てご覧、彼は下地をちゃんと作ってないから、画面にひびが入っているだろう、それから、この並木の真ん中の空のヴァルール（色価）がおかしいので、空が並木より前面に飛び出しているだろう」と教えてくれました。ドイツ中世絵画の素晴らしさや、イタリアの抽象画の魅力や、アメリカの具象画の新しい伝統など無数のことを教えてくれました。今からもう40数年前です。鉄線描（てっせんびょう）という極細のまっすぐな線を引く日本画の伝統をその展覧会の作品で教えてくれたりもしました。シルクロードや唐招提寺の壁画で有名になった平山郁夫の同期で、「彼の（若かった）あの頃の絵は幻想的で素晴らしかった」と言っていました。上野動物園の動物を幻想的に描いたりしていたそうです。

S先生は、絵にはきびしかったが、私に良くしてくれて、美術室によく行くとコーヒーを入れてくれて、学期末には学生の作品を壁に並べて、採点していましたが、私が行くと、採点してくれない、とか真顔で言っていました。それでゆっくりとコーヒーを飲んで、職員室に行くと、「もう少しで採点が終わります」とか言って、担任にペコペコ頭を下げ、また美術室に戻ると私と雑談ばかりをしていました。先生も私が教員をやめてまもなく、やはりやめて、絵に専念しました。一時は私の胸像を作ろうかなどと言って、何枚かスケッチをしましたが、実現しませんでした。そのスケッチを私は持っていたのですが、なくしてしまったのは残念です。

哲学者矢内原伊作YANAIHARA Isaku (1918 - 1989)についてもいろいろありますが、それはまた。

My dear old coffee shop "Road", Tachikawa, Tokyo

After graduated course of university I came back again to Tachikawa for new work of research at Sekinan Library. But my dear old coffee shop "Road" was already vanished perfectly, where I had often talked on our present and future life with my best friend and colleague SAEKI Shizuto at that time till the closed time when Auld Lang Syne was begun playing.
